Can you clear coat over vinyl decals on wood.
As you may know wood is a bit of a tricky surface when it comes to putting vinyl on it anyway.
I am finishing guitar necks with a decal.
Vinyl decals were never intended to have a clear coat put on top as far as i can discover within product specifications.
It appears that you can get different thicknesses for the decals.
I dont have access to a spray rig and i understand that you shouldn t brush on clear over a decal so spray can it is.
Generally a seal is not needed for a decal made with our glossy outdoor grade material but if you want to feel safer go ahead and apply a coat over your decal but please make it a light coat.
However i ve seen many do it with great success for nearly 20 years.
You can seal these all different ways depending on what you re going to use the project for.

May 20 2011 question i have a request from a customer to put a vinyl decal on an oak table top and clear it over.
The wood has been prepped properly and she applied the vinyl wording.
After varnishing you cannot remove the stickers unless you first remove the varnish.
Varnishing over stickers will seal them on the wood making their presence practically permanent.
The strength of the adhesive allowed for a strong application to the wood and therefore wouldn t curl the edges of the decal when a light coat of polyurethane was applied.
