It immediately stopped the draft through the chimney in my house. The top sealing chimney damper is designed to stop cold air from coming down the flue and expensive conditioned air from going up.

Top dampers are cheaper and easier to have repaired or replaced if need be as well. I think top sealing dampers are a great investment and energy savers and as a side benefit they preheat the stem of the chimney from the bottom to the top with warm air often allowing a much better up flow draft of the fireplace smoke. Only issue with ours is sometimes it closes all the way and sometimes it only closes about 3 4 of the way. Unlike the top mounted damper which is obviously located on the upper end of the chimney the throat damper is located more towards the fireplace.

A top damper works very similar to a throat damper. Burn safe and warm. It seems the cable sometimes interferes and only closes 3 4 of the way. It still prevents air from entering or exiting the home but the advantage to the top damper is that it seals air off at the top of the chimney which is more energy efficient.

It is much better than the standard damper that was in my fireplace before. The forever cap 16 in w x 12 in l cast aluminum chimney damper. The damper closes all the way but due to it s design a very small amount of force can break the seal.
